Done with biro this sketch of Ed Sheeran was made during recording sessions. The artist shows Ed momentarily glancing up towards us. I’m told by the artist Ed was using his tablet scrolling through hundreds of messages from fans. Ed is seen relaxed and happy as he sits for Phillip here. The artist shows another side of himself in this portrait opting for biro than graphite. This suggests to me that in the environment of creating music and art all mediums were explored and nothing was off limits. The crosshatching style is a particular highlight here and displays Phillip’s proficiency as an artist who possesses the confidence and skill to bring out of his creativity in whichever medium he chooses.

About the Artist:

In 1998, when he was 16, Phillip Butah was the youngest prizewinner in the competition Young Artists’ Britain: The Prince of Wales’s Young Artists’ Award. This encouraged him to take up art seriously, and he went on to study Fine Art at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. Phillip Butah is an outstanding draughtsman whose skills are particularly suited to portraiture. Apart from the accuracy and detail of visual appearance, Phillip’s drawings also capture the character and personality of the person in front of him.
